In the early days of vietnam, these were made of heavy canvas and when they got wet, the canvas would weigh down the fighter. Around 1967 the military started experimenting with nylon to lighten the load and still give the strength needed to last in battle. Although the nylon is not as quiet as the canvas, it is far superior for damp environments. This pouch also features the grenade carriers located on each side of the pouch, just in case you have some grenades that you want to carry. This m16 mag pouch has changed several times over the years and eventually were redesigned with molle fasteners like all of the other equipment currently used by our military and tactical units. This particular ALICE style is still highly requested from many of our veteran customers familiar with the original “782” fighting load gear used form 1967 up though around 2000.
