ERDL (Engineer Research and Development Laboratory) developed the four color camouflage pattern in 1948. ERDL camouflage (or “leaf pattern”) was officially issued to U.S. special operations, recon units, and Marines in Vietnam starting in 1967.
The United States Marine Corps (USMC) adopted the green-dominant version as standard issue in South Vietnam and later the U.S. Army introduced it on a wide scale in Southeast Asia.
